ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme Office has successfully transferred over 200 space technologies to non-space sectors for applications as diverse as cooling suits for a Formula 1 racing team, ground penetrating radar to detect cracks in mine tunnels and several health-care innovations.
The activities of TTPO have also led to the creation of a number of new start-up companies in Europe, many of which have been promoted through ESA’s Business Incubator. ESA is Europe’s gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world.

ESA is an international organisation with 19 Member States. By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, it can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country.

Novel imaging device to be used with millimetre and/or sub-millimetre radiation

What we offer:
The invention is a sub-millimeter wavelength imaging device and particularly but not exclusively an ambient temperature camera using either single or multiple heterodyne detectors. The terahertz electromagnetic spectrum extends over a range of frequencies where radio waves and optical waves merge and consequently the detection of terahertz radiation utilises a mixture of optical and radio wave technology. As a result of the dimensions of the individual components required to image at terahertz frequencies, the cost of terahertz imaging systems has generally been prohibitive. However, terahertz frequencies have long been recognised as potentially extremely useful frequencies for imaging purposes as many materials which are opaque in the visible region of the spectrum become transparent to terahertz waves. In particular, imagers at terahertz frequencies are suitable for imaging the Earth's surface as most weather conditions such as fog are transparent to terahertz waves.

Immediate applications for the imaging device are envisaged in both airborne and land vehicles, in security systems, in the chemical and food industries and in medical diagnostics. However, the scope of applications is not limited to those identified above and because of the low power requirements of the imaging system, it is particularly suited for example to imaging from space.

Real-Time Synthetic Aperture Radar Processing System and Method

What we offer:
The European Space Agency offers a real-time SAR processing system of SAR raw data. The image processing is performed by optical means without the need for high performance computers. No chemical film processing is necessary, no moving parts, and no reusable photosensitive materials are required, leading to an enormously improved system durability.

Innovations and advantages of the offer:
The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processing system according to the offered technology has the advantage that it allows a real-time processing of the SAR raw data. The computation intensive image processing, such as the Fourier transformation, is performed by optical processing means, doing away with the need for high performance computers. The electrical radar response signals are input into the optical processor by light modulation means and no chemical film processing is necessary so that the system may be permanently deployed in an air- or spacecraft. The durability of the system is enormously improved and since the reconstructed image of the radar target areas is converted to an electrical processed image signal, it can be easily processed by conventional analogue or digital signal processing techniques.

Miniature high-resolution optical spectrometer

What we offer:
The European Space Agency (ESA) presents a novel optical spectrometer working with a large free spectral range combined with a high spectral resolution. Particularly applicable to optical spectrometers for space exploration vessels, the technology has applications in spectrometry (RAMAN, LIBS), remote sensing, Earth Observation, measurements in chemistry, geology, environment, security etc

Innovations and advantages:
The second dispersion device is a diffraction grating, which is required by the high spectral resolution at high diffraction orders. Sufficient to analyse atomic emission lines.

Device to guide light from a curved focal plane to a flat focal plane array

What we offer:
The European Space Agency provides a solution for mapping a curved image field onto a flat imaging detector array. The technology reduces the cost and weight compared with similar solutions. At the focal point of the curved image the device splits the image up into lots of little bits down lots of little waveguides which map the image sections onto pixels on the flat detector array.

Innovations and advantages of the offer:
It is very light weight and with multiple lens solutions arrays while still robust enough once encased to withstand shocks.
Very little loss of light compared with multiple lens solutions to “flatten” the curved image field before it is mapped onto the focal plane array.
Far less costly in manufacturing than curved focal plane array CCD’s and multiple lens solutions.

What we are looking for:

High technology companies that are developing optical imaging systems that require very wide fields of view and suffer from loss of resolution due spherical aberration, wide angle camera’s, Telescopes, spectral imaging devices, LIDAR, dispersive spectrometers etc.

Reconfigurable beam forming network architecture

What we offer:
The European Space Agency offers an innovative, fully reconfigurable Beam Forming Network (BFN), able to support any type of antenna also in multi beam configuration to licencing. It can be used for the development of broadcasting /multicasting services and for point-to-point services soothing user terminals requirements.

The main advantages of the proposed innovative BFN are the following:
Fully reconfigurable but not complex BFN: it can be used both in transmission and in reception, also in the case of digital implementation.
It is not dependant on a specific antenna architecture as it is nowadays (e.g. : direct-radiating vs. focus): it allows for a modular, scalable and efficient design solution for reconfigurable BFNs capable of supporting various multi-beam configurations
It includes a plurality of input and output ports, and includes a plurality of signal dividers, phase and amplitude weighting units, switches and signal combiners to associate each input port to its output port through respective weighting units.

What we are looking for:
Domain of Application:

Even if the original Beam Forming Network has been developed for satellite navigation systems, such system has wide potential application in mobile and communication systems with strict requirements on reliability, quality of the signal and flexibility of the performance.
Such BFN, originally developed for satellite navigation systems, finds application in different areas: communication, RF instruments, Air Traffic Management and geo location.

Improved altimetry apparatus based on steerable antennas

What we offer:
The European Space Agency has developed an improved PARIS altimetry apparatus. The apparatus offers a compact architecture with two steerable antennas and a signal processing method which reduces possible accuracy errors. This apparatus can be used in ocean altimetry, tsunami detection, meteorology (wind over ocean), maritime navigation and safety industries.

Innovations and advantages:
This new PARIS altimeter architecture is particularly advantageous because it is compact, symmetric, and it allows easy calibration of differences in delay and/or gain between the two signal paths, which could negatively affect altimetry accuracy.
